Lesson 5
Review Otoshi-Uchi , Tsuki-Komi , Yoko-Uke , Yoko-Uchi and Gyaku Yoko-Uchi as line drills. Review Combinations 1 2 , and 3 .

Teach the following four combinations as an example of things students can practice on their own.

COMBINATION
Step in right Zenkutsu Dachi Otoshi-Uchi, Age-Uchi. Switch hands immediately after Age-Uchi before stepping in.

COMBINATION
Step in right Zenkutsu Dachi Yoko-Uke, Tsuki-Komi. Switch hands immediately after Tsuki-Komi before stepping in.

COMBINATION
Stepping in right Zenkutsu Dachi. Chudan Yoko-Uchi, Chudan Gyaku Yoko-Uchi. (Note: as you step in, switch hands by pulling Bo back to your attacking shoulder)

COMBINATION
Stepping in right Zenkutsu Dachi. Nagashi Zuki, Harai-Uke. Switch hands immediately after Harai-Uke before stepping in .

Gedan-Uchi [K] (low strike) (Gedan-Soto-Uchi) Transition into this from Uchi-Otoshi.

  1. Hold Bo with Jun-Nigiri, left hand uppermost. For best results assume a right Gyaku Zenkutsu Dachi.
  2. Position the lower section of the Bo near your right foot.
  3. Use it in an inside to outside movement, striking to the inside of your opponent's leading right knee.

replace this picture with Gyaku Zenkutsu Dachi

Harai-Uke [C] (Downward Block) (Sweeping Block) Can be done as a line drill from both sides. If stepping in from Yoi with left leg, must reverse Jun-Niqiri so left hand is foremost.
  1. Begin in Soto Hachiji Dachi. Hold Bo across your body with Jun-Nigiri, right hand uppermost.
  2. As you use both hands to raise the Bo to an angled position before you, right end toward ceiling, begin moving the Bo in a counterclockwise rotation. Push the upper (or right) section to the left and down with your right hand; the lower (or left) section to the right and up, with your left hand.
  3. Continue the rotation, crossing your right arm over your left, until the Bo lies horizontally across your body.
  4. Laterally, moving the Bo to your right side, position what is now the rear section of Bo behind your right shoulder. Tuck your left hand under your right armpit.
  5. Block by using your right hand to push the forward section of the weapon to the outside (that is, to the right).

COMBINATION [K] Stepping into Right Zenkutsu Dachi, Tate Morote-Uke (vertical double handed block). Continue motion directly into Otoshi-Uchi (overhead strike), Nagashi_Zuki (sliding thrust). Yoko-Uke (inside to outside), Harai-Uke (downward block).
