Review Otoshi-Uchi , Tsuki-Komi , Yoko-Uke , Yoko-Uchi and Gyaku Yoko-Uchi as line drills. Review Combinations 1 & 2 .

Age-Uchi [K] (Furiage-Uchi) (Upward Strike) Can be done forward and backward as a line drill. Must switch lead hand while Bo is at your shoulder, and must rotate Bo 180 degrees right before striking. Easiest when performed right after Otosi-Uchi.
  1. Maintain Jun-Nigiri hold and pull the upper or right section of the Bo back over your right shoulder (assumes you're in right Zenkutsu Dachi).
  2. At the same time, swiftly shoot the lower section forward with your right hand and up into your opponent's chin or groin.

Gyaku Age Uchi (Reverse Upward Strike)
  1. Maintain Jun-Nigiri hold and pull the upper or right section of the Bo back over your left shoulder (assumes you're in right Zenkutsu Dachi).
  2. At the same time, swiftly shoot the lower section forward with your left hand and up into your opponent's chin or groin.

Osae-Uke [K] (Bar or Pinning Maneuver)
  1. Assume Soto Hachiji Dachi. Using Jun-Nigiri, angle the Bo across your body, right hand uppermost.
  2. Step forward with your left foot.
  3. Pivoting clockwise into a left Gyaku Zenkutsu Dachi. As you pivot, bring the left section of the weapon down and around in a clockwise sweep over your left foot.
  4. Firmly push the left end of the staff into the target to deliver the pinning action.

Tsuki-Otoshi [K] (Gedan-Tsuki) (Low Thrust)
  1. Hold the Bo easily but securely with both hands, spreading them palms toward the floor, about two and one-half shoulder-widths apart. Assume right Gyaku Zenkutsu Dachi.
  2. Angle the Bo over your right leg, its left end held high, its right end aimed at your opponent's foot.
  3. Push down firmly with your left hand. Use the right to guide the staff and fire the Bo into the target. Do not twist your wrist.

Tate-Uke [K] (Vertical Block)
  1. Assume Soto Hachiji Dachi and hold the Bo across your body (at a slight angle, in a natural position) with Jun-Nigiri, right hand uppermost.
  2. Move the Bo counterclockwise into a vertical position directly before you, your right hand on top and even with your forehead.
  3. Using both hands to reverse the movement, rotate the Bo clockwise 180 degrees.
  4. Block with the center section as the Bo enters a vertical position with your left hand on top.

Practice Tate-Uke from Zenkutsu Dachi, Neko Ashi Dachi, Kosa Dachi and Kokutsu Dachi with both sides forward.

COMBINATION [K]

Stepping directly sideways to the right into right Gyaku Zenkutsu Dachi, Osae-Uke (pinning manuever), Tsuki-Otoshi (low thrust). Pivot 180 degrees to the left into Left Zenkutsu Dachi, Age-Uchi (upward strike) (to opponents groin).
